Serena Hackerott, Ph.D. Candidate

I joined the EELab in August 2018 as a Ph.D. student with a broad interest in connections between environmental epigenetics and coral reef conservation. I completed my B.S. in Biology and M.S. in Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specifically studying coral reef ecology and the Caribbean lionfish invasion. After graduating from my M.S. in 2014, I taught marine and environmental science to college students on islands in the Caribbean and Pacific, with the most recent being the Marshall Islands. My Ph.D. research in the Environmental Epigenetics Lab (EELab) focuses on the role of epigenetic mechanisms in coral responses and adaptation to stress, as well as the potential of environmental epigenetics to improve coral restoration and conservation efforts.
